Why HP for Upstream Oil & Gas Workstations

Geoscientists need to be able to run standard industry applications with the maximum performance, scalability and screen real estate available. Geoscience applications stress workstation architectures to the full, due to the general use of 3D volumetric data, including seismic amplitudes and their attributes. These require large memory sizes, interactive volume rendering speeds and fast computations to ensure productivity.

HP workstation architectures incorporate the latest technology developments from leading component vendors and deliver market-leading performance, while adhering to industry standards. They provide the highest scalability and performance of any workstation in its class at any one time in the market today.

HP incorporates industry-leading technology with full tested and certified Independent Software Vendor applications, to meet the demands of today’s Exploration & Production workflows.

HP offers workstations that span individual desktop user requirements all the way through to large, immersive 3-channel stereo visualization environments.

Why HP for CAE Users

The trends in Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) toward increasingly powerful, less expensive hardware and more sophisticated, easier-to-use software combine to make engineering analysis feasible today. This has enabled analytical engineering and process manufacturing organizations to vastly improve productivity, bringing products to market faster and cheaper. For example, complex optimization studies, using computational fluid and solid mechanics techniques, enables product design integrity to be improved before costly investments are made in downstream operations. To build complex analysis’ capable infrastructures means not longer high investments.
However, rapidly changing hardware and software architectures brings CAE down to every engineer’s workplace – running on high-performance HP workstations based on leading Intel and AMD processor technology. HP has teamed with leading independent software vendors to offer the best technical computing solutions for your CAE needs.

Siemens PLM Software Solutions

Image courtesy of EDS PLM Solutions and Industrial Juguetera, S.A. (INJUSA)

HP and Siemens PLM Software Solutions offer inspiring legacies of success from our partnership that started in 1988, and we remain energized by clear visions of the future. Powerful HP systems are optimized to run the latest NX and TeamCenter solutions from Siemens PLM Software and help fuse best-in-breed technology into product lifecycle management solutions that will spark innovation today.
HP offers differentiated value beyond the box by leveraging almost two decades of hands-on experience with Siemens PLM Software applications as a result of having HP senior technical consultants working on-site at Siemens PLM Software. These on-site consultants ensure we deliver optimized, reliable performance on HP systems and can provide world class support if issues do arise. No other vendor has this level of commitment to Siemens PLM Software.
Due to our commitment to resources on-site Siemens PLM Software has designated HP as a Premium Partner. What this means is that when Siemens PLM Software introduces a new application, instantly every (actual, new and future) HP Workstation is supported by Siemens PLM Software – without formal certification. This is unique and no other HW vendor has this level of support and must first finish the formal certification process, delaying your ability to be supported by Siemens PLM Software GTAC team.

Landmark

Landmark, part of the Halliburton oilfield services organization, is the leading vendor of geoscience solutions to oil and gas companies worldwide. Its flagship 3D interpretation software, GeoProbe®, was originally developed a multiprocessor and multi-graphics pipe application, able to visualize and interpret very large amounts of seismic data.

The HP xw9400 workstation, with its multiprocessor Opteron architecture, large memory (64GB RAM) and twin 16-lane PCI-Express Nvidia graphics cards, is ideally suited as a platform for GeoProbe. It is able to deliver up to four high-resolution (1920 x 1200) display outputs, which can be combined to provide single screen space of up to 3840 x 2400 for a GeoProbe session.

Scalable graphics for the visualization centre

With the advanced Workstation graphics technology available in the HP xw9400 you can today power your multi-screen projection walls from a single HP Workstation system. With advanced features like screen overlap, active and passive stereo you bring your data from your work desk directly into the Visualization centre, running it on the same platform that you have at your desk. With up to four highest resolution display outputs and largest amount of memory, a single HP xw9400 Workstation supersedes performance of any proprietary Visualization system at a fraction of the price. It's never been so easy to bring your data on the big screen.
You want to scale further ? With HP you can. Advanced Workstation graphics cluster technology allows you to display your data on the largest power-walls or Cave displays with the ultimate 3D performance you demand.

HP's high-end Workstation systems xw9400 are the building blocks for these solutions. Build your very own cluster, let HP build it for you or use pre-configured solutions from HP like the Scalable Visualization Array (SVA)

Wi-Fi is an abbreviation for wireless fidelity. It refers to wireless networks based on the IEEE 802.11 standard, including 802.11b (an 11 Mbps technology, currently the most popular form of Wi-Fi), 802.11a (54 Mbps, a newer and emerging favourite), and 802.11g (55 Mbps).

Wireless security options

To ensure wireless communications are safe from unauthorised access there are three main ways of preserving network integrity:
  • MAC addressing
  • Physical layer encryption
  • Traditional VPN security

MAC (media access control) addressing

Each network card a unique hardware identification number called the MAC address. The network access point can keep approved addresses in a password-protected table and limit communications to these approved devices. Make sure your network access point supports MAC addressing, and be sure you enable it. Quality access points from HP always support MAC addressing.

Physical layer encryption

WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)

WEP started with the earliest versions of 802.11b, and is supposedly the equivalent of wired networks. WEP does not offer much protection.

Virtual Private Networks

A VPN is a gateway to your network that authorises users accessing it from outside. If you can't upgrade your wireless network to WPA, add VPNs for your wireless clients, even inside your building. VPN is not a new technology and there are many resources and tools available to help you set one up. Combined with MAC addresses and either WEP or WPA, VPN can make your wireless network extremely secure

HP graphics cluster features

Standard component based render nodes:
The rendering nodes are composed of HP xw9400 Workstations with latest NVIDIA Quadro FX graphics technology. When coupleing these systems in a graphics cluster we drive graphics performance to unprecedented levels.

Scalability:
The HP graphics clusters scale with your needs. Add nodes to increase performance, visual fidelity and/or resolution; this allows the lowest entry point for multiple systems in the industry while offering the potential to scale.

Investment protection:
Because we use standard component technology and because of the graphics cluster modularity, you can start small and buy more workstations as
required: as new technologies become available, you can replace the previous HP workstations in the your graphics cluster.

Transparent application support:
HP works closely with leading software partners that provide middle-ware solutions to run non cluster-aware professional 3D OpenGL applications on a HP graphics cluster. Such solutions are for example Chromium, TechViz or Fakespace Conduit software.
